Pixies - Did you Know?
More Information about Pixies
Pixies are found in various places and times throughout history. Even today, pixies can often be found in modern media such as television, movies, literature, and video games. The earliest known occurrence of pixies in literature can be found in Victorian era poems by authors such as Samuel Minturn Peck and Nora Chesson. Many other poets and authors of the 19th century would also write about pixies in their work.
The first known use of pixies in the 20th century appears to be in a 1902 novel “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus”, where pixies were depicted as being Santa’s helpers. Many modern authors such as Michael Buckley, author of a series of novels collectively known as “The Sisters Grimm”, have used pixies. Eoin Colfer, author of the well-known “Artemis Fowl” series, puts pixies into a modern day setting, having been driven underground by the rampant pollution of the planet Earth.
J.K. Rowling, author of the world-renowned “Harry Potter” series, has pixies appear in one of her novels. Pixies have also shown up in various forms in Marvel comics. Perhaps the most well known use of pixies in modern media is that of Tinkerbell from “Peter Pan”. While in the original story by J.M. Barrie, Tinkerbell was a fairy, the Disney adaptation and subsequent materials have referred to her as being one of the pixies. In the Disney cartoons, Tinkerbell's image was modeled after the Margaret Kerry, the actress the pixie on stage.
Overall, it is not hard to find pixies in today’s world. Even with the prevalence of science fiction and realism in today’s society, pixies are still prevalent in modern children's literature.
