The Gnome and The Pixie

Part 2: Enter Fairy City

Fairy City is a wonderful modern mythical metropolis! Its streets are bustling with life, carving a grid through magnificent skyscrapers. Well to average gnomes and pixies those buildings seem to scrape the sky.

“We’re not in the garden anymore, Mr. Gnome McDoogal!” Buddy Pixie exclaimed.

Gnome and Pixie stroll down the main street, taking in all the colourful lights. Fairy City is actually home to all kinds of interesting creatures, but it got its name from being the hub of Fairy culture and heritage. It’s not just busy on the ground level either. There are lots of fairies and pixies quickly flying overhead. The air traffic over the city leaves a thin cloud of fairy and pixie dust in the sky. The lights of the city streets reflect and refract off the fairy dust in the atmosphere, creating a shimmering, sparkling aurora. No matter how many time they come here, Gnome and Pixie are always in awe of the spectacle that is Fairy City when they arrive.

“Yeah it’s definitely not the garden. But I couldn’t live here, this place is just too much to have to deal with 24/7. Besides, it’s like I said before anyway; a good Gnome belongs in the garden, that’s his duty.” Gnome said to Mr. Pixie.

“Geez man, you can’t forget about who you are for one second can you? I’m sure you could do anything you want and still be a good gnome. You don’t have to be the paragon of gnome-dom you know! It’s not like anyone is really paying attention to you anyway. Well besides me, and even I don’t think you’re worth the attention I give you. Ha ha.” Mr. Pixie gave gnome a piece of his mind.

Gnome and Mr. Pixie reach the Fairy City Casino, and briskly walk inside as they continue to argue.

“You’re an idiot Mr. Pixie. You do know that you’re a Garden Pixie right? You belong in the garden just like me. You might not like it, but you can’t hide from it. I mean you were intelligently designed to be a Garden Pixie! That’s your purpose.” Gnome lectured.

“blah blah. Forget that stuff now, we’re inside. It’s time to gamble away our government cheques! Maybe you’ll even see that Fairy who you met last time, and somehow forgot to actually call her! What are the odds she’ll talk to you if she’s here?” Mr. Pixie teases.

“Mr. Pixie, I understand that you think you’re hilarious, like all the time, but you’re not. Look I just didn’t know what to say, but I was going to do it.” Gnome said in his defense.

Gnome and Pixie head straight for the slot machines, this is the beginning of their Fairy City Casino ritual. Mr. Pixie knows that Gnome needs some time to loosen up, so for the first hour or so, he indulges Gnome’s affinity for sitting at the slots like a chain-smoking granny. Gnome starts out slow, putting the first coin in to the slot, and pulling the lever, it seems all very drawn out and laboured. Once the machine starts to play that first round though, with the rolling numbers and symbols, the flashing lights and electronic sounds, it flips a switch inside Gnome. He starts to pick up the pace, using all of his gnome intensity to focus on the shiny slot machine before him. This is the moment Mr. Pixie has been waiting for all week. The cue that Gnome is finally ready to just have fun and forget about being in the garden, and all the other boring crap he thinks is so important.

With Gnome fixated on the slot machine and Mr. Pixie fixated on the idea that Gnome is finally going to be fun for a few hours, they almost didn’t notice Ms. Jessica Fairy approaching. But there’s something about her presence that got their attention, even with their other senses occupied.

Jessica Fairy was pretty tall by fairy standards, she had straight hair that she kept short for wing function reasons; getting hair tangled is enough of a pain in the ass and when you add wings to the equation, keeping it long isn’t worth it. She’s wearing a long elegant black dress, always on the cutting edge of fairy fashion. As she walks light sprinkles of fairy dust fall from her wings with each step. “Hello boys” she greets Gnome and Mr. Pixie.
