He got the idea of Garden Gnomes from local myths and legends of the tiny men who would tend to gardens at night. Griebel’s Garden Gnomes took off in Germany, spreading outwards to places such as France and the United Kingdom.

Garden Gnomes manufacturing spread throughout Germany, with many businesses opening and closing over the years. Each producer of Garden Gnomes had their own unique style, so it was not hard to find Garden Gnomes that appealed to you. Unfortunately, World War II put a lot of stress on the industry, and many makers of Garden Gnomes gave up the business. As of today, the only manufacturers of Garden Gnomes in Germany are the descendants of Griebel, while other companies moved their manufacturing of Garden Gnomes to Poland and China.
