Garden Gnomes
No doubt you have seen Garden Gnomes at one point in your life. Those diminutive little bearded men that many people place in their gardens for decoration. Have you ever wondered where Garden Gnomes come from? Read on to find out more about these strange creatures we know as Garden Gnomes.
Garden Gnomes began their life in 19th Century Germany. The production of Garden Gnomes began in a town called Gräfenroda, located in the state of Thuringia, Germany. The man credited for starting the creation of Garden Gnomes is one Philip Griebel, who started by making terracotta animals. He got the idea of Garden Gnomes from local myths and legends of the tiny men who would tend to gardens at night. Griebel’s Garden Gnomes took off in Germany, spreading outwards to places such as France and the United Kingdom.
Garden Gnomes manufacturing spread throughout Germany, with many businesses opening and closing over the years. Each producer of Garden Gnomes had their own unique style, so it was not hard to find Garden Gnomes that appealed to you. Unfortunately, World War II put a lot of stress on the industry, and many makers of Garden Gnomes gave up the business. As of today, the only manufacturers of Garden Gnomes in Germany are the descendants of Griebel, while other companies moved their manufacturing of Garden Gnomes to Poland and China.
Garden Gnomes are a well-known and often welcome addition to any garden. If you’re looking for the perfect addition to your garden or lawn, maybe Garden Gnomes are the right choice for you.
